Detox Your Home – Part 3: Air Pollutants, Mold, and Fragrances

When I started detoxing my home, I focused on food first. But what really surprised me was how much the air in my house was affecting my health. Once I made a few changes, like improving ventilation and ditching synthetic fragrances, I noticed fewer headaches, less sinus congestion, and deeper sleep.

This post dives into indoor air quality: the invisible toxins we breathe in every day and how to clear the air (literally) without turning your life upside down.

Why Indoor Air Quality Matters

Most of us spend 90% of our time indoors, and studies show that indoor air can be 2–5 times more polluted than outdoor air (EPA). For people with gut issues, MCAS, asthma, or chronic inflammation, poor air quality can worsen symptoms and make it harder for the body to heal.

Common Indoor Air Pollutants

1. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

VOCs are gases released from common household products like:

  • Paints and varnishes
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Air fresheners and candles
  • New furniture and flooring (off-gassing)
Painted Room

Common VOCs: Formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, acetone

Health effects: Headaches, fatigue, respiratory issues, hormone disruption, and even cancer with long-term exposure.

What to do:

  • Choose low-VOC or VOC-free paint (look for GREENGUARD Gold certification)
  • Air out new furniture before bringing it indoors
  • Ventilate while cleaning or using products with strong odors

2. Synthetic Fragrances

Those “clean” smells from air fresheners, candles, and scented cleaners? They’re often a mix of many undisclosed chemicals, many of which are endocrine disruptors.

Where you’ll find them:

  • Air fresheners
  • Laundry detergent
  • Perfumes and body sprays
  • Scented candles and plug-ins

Health effects: Hormone imbalance, migraines, sinus issues, respiratory irritation, skin reactions

What to do:

  • Switch to fragrance-free or essential oil-based products
  • Open windows for fresh air
  • Use baking soda and vinegar as natural deodorizers

Helpful Resource: EWG’s Guide to Healthy Cleaning

Before making changes, my house was filled with artificial fragrances. This included detergents, soaps, candles, and many other items. I had always been sensitive to smells, but didn’t realize the impact it was actually having on my health. One of the first swaps that I made that had the biggest impact was changing my laundry detergent. Having those chemicals all over the clothing I was wearing, it absorbing into my skin and inhaling the smells wreaked havoc on me. I would recommend looking at the using non-toxic laundry detergent.

A few recommendations:
1. Attitude Living
Why it’s better: EWG Verified, hypoallergenic, and uses natural ingredients.
Bonus: They offer refillable bulk boxes and scented options with essential oils.

2. Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds
Why it’s better: All-purpose cleaner including laundry, made with plant-based surfactants and essential oils.
Best for: Simplifying your routine—one bottle for everything.

3. Mold and Moisture

Mold thrives in damp environments—bathrooms, basements, under sinks, and around windows.

Signs of hidden mold:

  • Musty smell
  • Water damage or discoloration on walls
  • Condensation on windows

Health effects: Sinus issues, fatigue, brain fog, asthma, and MCAS flares

What to do:

  • Use a dehumidifier in damp areas
  • Fix leaks promptly
  • Run bathroom fans during and after showers
  • Use a HEPA air purifier with mold spore filtering

Testing Tip: If you suspect mold, consider a professional inspection or a test kit like Mold Armor or an ERMI test through a lab like Mycometrics.

4. Dust and Dust Mites

Dust may seem harmless, but it acts like a sponge for VOCs, flame retardants, phthalates, and even pesticide residue.

Common hotspots:

  • Carpets and rugs
  • Upholstered furniture
  • Bedding and mattresses
  • Stuffed toys

What to do:

  • Vacuum with a HEPA filter 1–2x per week
  • Wet dust with a microfiber cloth
  • Wash bedding weekly in hot water
  • Minimize wall-to-wall carpeting if possible

My Experience With Dust

I didn’t realize how much of a issue dust was for me until I started to address it. My house wasn’t covered in dust, but I wasn’t getting as deep of a clean as it needed. The main areas of the house didn’t cause me too much of an issue, but it was my bedroom that I noticed symptoms at night. At first I thought it might be sleep apnea as I was frequently waking up at night, feeling like I wasn’t getting full and deep breaths. It turned out it was the dust that was bothering me. I increased the frequency of vacuuming to two times per week, and changed my vacuum to one with a HEPA filter. This drastically reduced the volume of dust and kept my body and allowed my body to focus more on relaxing and healing at night.

Air Purification and Ventilation

Open Windows Often

Even just 10 minutes a day can significantly improve air turnover, especially while cooking or cleaning.

Use Exhaust Fans

Run fans in the kitchen and bathroom to reduce moisture and cooking fumes.

Invest in an Air Purifier

Look for one with a true HEPA filter and a carbon filter for VOCs. Some top-rated options include:

  • AirDoctor
  • Coway Airmega
  • Levoit Core Series

I have the Coway Airmega and I find that it works extremely well. I clean the filter each week and find that it has a decent amount of dust inside that it has pulled from the air.

FAQ: Clearing the Air About Indoor Pollution

What is off-gassing?

Off-gassing is the release of chemicals (often VOCs) from products like new furniture, carpets, and mattresses. When you first bring them home, it is that “new” smell.

How can I tell if poor air quality is affecting me?

Watch for frequent headaches, sinus congestion, fatigue, brain fog, or worsening of asthma or allergies indoors.

Can I test my home’s air?

Yes! Use home VOC meters, mold kits, or get professional indoor air quality assessments.
