Detox Your Home – Part 1: The Hidden Toxins Lurking in Your Home
When I first started learning about toxins in my home, it honestly felt overwhelming. I thought I was doing everything right—eating healthy, cleaning regularly, buying “natural” products. But once I started connecting the dots between my chronic gut issues and what I was exposed to every day, things began to shift.
In this post, I want to walk you through the first step I took, which was just becoming aware of what might be hiding in your home. Not to scare you, but to empower you. Because once you see it, you can start to change it.
What Are Household Toxins, Really?
Household toxins are the chemicals we’re exposed to through everyday things like food, cleaning products, furniture, and even the air we breathe. Some cause irritation right away, while others build up over time and quietly impact hormones, digestion, immunity, and more.
For those of us with gut issues, that chronic low-level exposure can make symptoms worse—and make healing a lot harder.
Some common sources include:
- Processed foods and packaging
- Pesticides on produce
- Synthetic fragrances in air fresheners and cleaners
- Dust, mold, and VOCs from furniture or paint
- Tap water with heavy metals or chlorine byproducts

Why It Matters for Gut Health
This was the connection I didn’t fully appreciate at first. Our gut isn’t just about what we eat—it’s also about what we absorb, what we breathe in, and how well our body can detox.
Toxins can:
- Disrupt the gut microbiome
- Trigger immune responses and inflammation
- Burden detox organs like the liver, which support gut healing
And when your gut is already inflamed or sensitive, this is where other problems can start, or get worse. Things like SIBO, candida, MCAS, and a host of other issues thrive on toxins, even small exposures can tip things over the edge.
At the height of my issues, I would wake up in the middle of the night, my heart racing and have labored breathing. This was happening night after night. At first I didn’t understand why this was happening, and only at night in my house. Eventually I realized that I was having something similar to an allergic reaction to the dust in my room. Even though I was vacuuming regularly, the stress on my body from other issues, caused smaller amounts of dust to have an oversized reaction. I had never had a reaction to dust like this before, which made it very difficult to determine what the issue was.
You Don’t Have to Do It All at Once
Here’s the good news: you don’t need to overhaul your life overnight. That’s not realistic, and it’s not necessary. Category by category. Starting first by understanding what products have toxins in it, and then taking action.
This series will help you:
- Identify the biggest toxin sources in your home
- Understand how they affect health
- Get simple, actionable steps to make your space safer
I will break it down into the following sections:
- Foods
- Air
- Water
- Household products
